Festival is presented by Red Chemistry and Miami Dade College.
The festival will run APRIL 29 - MAY 9 with screenings at the TOWER THEATER, THE Miami Beach Cinematheque, the Miami Beach High School, the Alliance Française on Calle Ocho, the FiU’s auditorium and will close at the TOWER THEATER.
Parties will take place during the course of the festival at the Betsy’s Hotel on Miami Beach, at the Alliance Francaise on Calle Ocho. A special tribute will be made to French and German Cinema. Other countries represented are: Spain (closing night), Italy, Israel, Poland, Portugal, Serbia and Hungary.
May 5th : a special evening dedicated to short films made by film students will take place at the Miami Beach High School Auditorium with a juried competition for local films made by MBHS students. 3 best European shorts will be shown. Medias and corporate sponsors will gather to give away cash prizes to the best directors
ROMANTIC FILMS STARRING: Zabou Breitman, Ronit Elkabetz, Marta Etura, Maria Buzas, HIGHLIGHT A PROGRAM INCLUDING A TRIBUTE TO LEGENDARY GERMAN ACTRESS MARLENE DIETRICH, 20 U.S. PREMIERES OF FILMS FROM 12 COUNTRIES, INCLUDES A ROMANTIC SHORT FILM COMPETITION FOR EUROPEAN & LOCAL STUDENTS at Miami Beach High School.
The festival featuring 20 independent, first-run foreign feature films, with international stars Zabou Breitman, Ronit Elkabetz, Marta Etura, Maria Buzas, Catherine Deneuve and representing 12 countries, will premier in the U.S. soil at the Fourth Annual “Romance in a Can” (RIAC) Film Festival, in Puerto Rico and Miami, at romantic indoor and outdoor venues.
The 10 -day event – the only romantic film festival in the U.S. – will include a tribute to the legendary German actress, Marlene Dietrich (on Valentine’s night at the Miami Beach Cinematheque) as well as a short film competition for film students from Europe, Puerto Rico and Miami. David Frankel, director of Marley & Me and The Devil Wears Prada will be attendance as the guest of honor and festival judge on May 5th at Miami Beach High School.
Among the films that to be screened: “7 Minutes”, “Mujer Invisible”, “El Angel del Accordeon” (Spain), “Eccentricities of a Blond Girl” and “Talking Picture” (Portugal), “At a Glance”(Italy), “Nothing Personal” (France); “Jaffa” (Israel) with Ms. Elkabetz; “Memory” and “Effi Briest” (Germany), “Here and There” (Serbia), “Pin Prick” ( Hungary) and “Little Moscow” ( Poland) from independent directors who want to premier their films in the U.S. Other feature films will be added to the Miami festival-German and French classics at the Tower Theater and Alliance Francaise where most screenings will take place.
“Preserving the romance of film, far away from the war and violence, is my vision for the film festival, said Isabelle Lambert, executive director of Romance in a Can “Presenting films that are uplifting, refreshing, classy, glamorous, funny and artsy from so many countries draws a very diverse audience in the very romantic towns of Miami & San Juan.”
RIAC draws an ever growing audience of more of 4500 people a year since 2006 .Red Chemistry Inc. is a not- for-profit organization dedicated to promoting the work of independent European filmmakers making their American debut, sponsoring the student short film competition, and an array of special events, while raising funds for youth arts programs.
